Having taken a friend’s off just the other week, I didn’t expect there to be anything holding them on.
I got the Falcon emblems off the front fenders to clean up both them and the fender. Either way, it will give me extra incentive to get going on rebuilding the original. In fact I’m pretty sure this green isn’t going to look too hot next to the color we’ll be spraying – but Ethan insists it will be head-turning. Ethan’s replaced a few parts and cleaned it up – painting it his favorite signature bright-green color (no, that’s not the color we’ll be spraying on the car). In the meantime, Ethan and I were gifted another 170 inline-six which was basically ready to go. And with Studie as my hot rod, I’d like to keep Falcon more original.) (I know it isn’t economical, but it’s a great opportunity for me to do my first engine rebuild. I haven’t rebuilt it, but it’s in my plans to. The original 144 straight-six will be going back in the car, but not just yet. Perhaps you were wondering if Falcon’s inline-six would be going back in – and if so, did I already rebuild it? Yes and no. In the meantime Ethan worked on some of the final engine assembly. With limited lighting in the shop, daylight seemed like a better time to spray color – so that’s first thing on the list for tomorrow. By the time the primer had dried and I’d painstakingly sanded the surfaces smooth (which took MUCH longer than I’d expected) it was already dark.

The correct color is TRW #630224 or Eastwood's "dark Ford blue." ** The blue used on 1966-1968 Ford engines is a darker blue than used on earlier Ford 352 valve covers. * The blue used on these engines is very similar to the lighter blue used on the late-'60s Ford engines. To help clarify this situation, we have created the following chart for reference. Yes, Ford engines were painted blue - but not until 1966 and not after 1981. I have seen this on more than one occasion, but never on a car restored to the level of this Thunderbird, and it brings out a misconception apparently more common than you might expect. Not wanting to offend the justifiably proud owner by questioning the engine color, I complimented him on the car and walked away. Unfortunately, all this outstanding detailing surrounded an engine painted "Ford Blue". All the proper decals and markings were in place, the hoses and belts were correct and held in place by the proper clamping, etc. The closer I studied the car, the more amazed I was by the attention to detail throughout the restoration, particularly in the engine compartment. Obviously, the combination of the sunroof and big engine made this one very desirable Thunderbird. Making this Bird even more rare was the fact that it was powered by the 350 hp, 430 CID Linclon engine. I attended a large Ford show this past summer and encountered a beautifully restored '60 Thunderbird with the factory sunroof, one of slightly more than 900 so equipped.
